Ink Washes

Unusual contrasts in texture and value can be achieved by combining pen-and-ink stroke work and ink-and-brush painting. This procedure requires a water-absorbent surface such as heavy drawing paper or, better yet, a cold-press watercolor paper.

India ink, fountain pen ink, transparent liquid acrylic or watercolor may be used for the washes. Pen work will stroke easily over all of these mediums and if you use a brush-proof ink in your pen, the washes may be overlaid. Try to match the black or Sepia inks used in your pen with the color selected for the wash. Payne’s Gray washes will match bluish black inks, while mixtures of Umber, Sepia and black washes will complement a brown or warm black ink. Or simply dilute the ink in your cartridge for a perfect match. Control the darkness of the wash by varying the amount of water added.

A no. 4 round watercolor brush and a ¼¼″ (0.6cm) stroke brush work well for applying washes to small projects. If you’re using diluted India ink for your wash, you may have to use a solvent to clean your brush.
